If you hover over the food you can see a bar for the time remaining until it's no longer frozen, and the debuffs will disappear.Unhappiness rises when tobacco is not smoked. Funnily enough this is the one negative trait that actually includes a little positive effect as well. Smoker means that the longer your character goes without smoking the more gradually unhappy they will get.
